Thank You

Thank you for all the feedback, postive and negative (but mostly negative). It made me think quite a lot and to be fair you're right, a lot of people do have it worse than me, in fact I never claimed otherwise. It was an interesting social experiment, even if it was the wrong thing to be doing.

I've decided to remove the donation button, but I would like to have a site dedicated to medical student debt (not just mine). So watch this space.

To those who donated, if you'd like a refund let me know, otherwise i'll give what is left to a local hospital charity.

feel free to contact me at medicalstudentindebt@hotmail.co.uk

I think it's a great shame that you've taken down your original post. Why shouldn't you ask for cash? It's up to people if they want to give. I wouldn't because I don't have it to spare, and if I did I would give it to another cause - not that your cause isn't worthy, just that there is a hierarchy. However, if I was flush (and plenty of people are) I don't see why someone shouldn't bung a tenner to a medical student in debt. Plenty of people spend more on a round of drinks and I'd much rather see it go to you.

Build up your blog into a useful resource and monetize it with one of the various ad schemes, e.g. Google Adsense, you may not clear your debt, but you will end up with something more substantial - a growing blog. Perhaps you could blog about the trials and tribulations of being a medic. Just a thought, you never know people might voluntarily donate without you even asking if you were providing a resource they found entertaining and useful.

Get your donation button back on, I wouldn't let other peoples negative comments put you off, good on you for doing it first!

Good luck with your studies and thanks for coming on our forum to fight your corner.

30,000 pounds of debt for five years of med school???

That's wonderful... that converts to about 58,000 US dollars, or about the price of one year of med school in the USA, or the price of two years in Canada. Do these cheap British schools accept American and Canadian transfers? How do we apply?

Seriously, dude, let's give the donations to students who are planning to work in free clinics or volunteer with Doctors without Borders. Nothing on your site makes me think that you intend to do anything with your medical degree but rake in cash.

I hope you succeed in consolidating your debts.

I would like to point out that almost every medical student in the world leaves school with huge academic debt. It's part of the job, unfortunately. When I (in Singapore) graduate from Med School, I'll have just over US$70k worth of student loans to pay back with an annual salary of about US$25k. I really doubt there's a need for med school students to ask for donations; just suck it up and work to pay it off later on... But that's just what I think. God bless with whatever you plan to do.
